My family comes from a part of Macedonia that also practices a form bridal face painting (Kercove/kicevo), but we consider ourselves to be Albanian. Also, might I add that the origin of "šar" could also come from the albanian word "sharrë" which means Saw (like the tool)...a common word used to describe mountains (Sawtooth, Sierra Nevadas, etc).<br />Very interesting read though. I found these words: <br />Akkadian šarrum 'king'<br />Balochi word for leader is sar-ok, from sar -head- in Iranian languages.<br />But the problem with all these words is that they come from far away languages. I was trying to concentrate on the languages that were at some stage spoken by the people who lived in the area. Serbian is full of world with Gaelic roots, the mountain was once inhabited by the Celts so this is why I went that way...oldeuropeanculturehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07880222013739472782noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8743102750721348863.post-48152058215180086062019-02-17T10:31:24.276-08:002019-02-17T10:31:24.276-08:00This is one of the best blogs I have ever read. Like in the English word "very", which in German is "sehr". But I also want to point out another possibility. And that is the opposite. That a conquering (or passing) tribe or people wanted to humiliate the people who lived there and belittle the mountain, which was so special and central to the lives of those who lived there. I wonder about this because I am studying Sumerian. And in Sumerian, the word "sahar" means "a mound of silt, dust, a heap. A trash pile etc". Sometimes used in vernacular to mean "a mountain". And also used to describe servants, valets and slaves (poor people). Depending on how you use the word it can also mean a "mud bumper or fender", "to excavate (silt)" or to move dirt...also it means a silt or dust covering and in vernacular used to mean "a scab" or to return someone/something to a pile if dust (to kill or to die). Also, in Sumerian, the word for "mountain", also means "foreigners". - just some passing thoughts I had, while reading your blog post.
